USPTO Technology Leadership Services

The primary mission of the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) is to promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing, for limited times to inventors, the exclusive right to their respective discoveries (Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution). The Office of Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is committed to managing USPTO’s information systems in a cost-effective manner and ensure the solutions meet the needs of the Business Areas.

Challenge

Like many large Federal organizations various USPTO systems, over a period of time were developed leveraging latest technology and platforms available at the time. Most have served the USPTO well and continue to be the backbone of the core automated capabilities of the organization. Over time, several stovepipe systems have been added to meet the demands of the USPTO. These are not connected in automated ways nor based on interoperability standards.

Solution

Acentle provided critical application architecture subject matter experts to provide direction, oversight, and vision guidance to the USPTO. Functioning as subject matter experts, our team is the spearhead for next generation initiatives promoting interoperability and providing additional project management oversight for the contracted development teams. Our team supported the design and verification of “as-is” legacy system and “to-be” future next generation architecture. As part of the effort, architecture and approach designs are developed, and development team oversight is performed to ensure the highest quality deliverables and code are delivered and aligned to the enterprise technical stack. We ensured that next generation systems have a stable platform for development and integration as well as provide recommendations to stabilize and enhance existing legacy systems until they can be phased out.
